Irezumi or more specifically, "Wabori" is the traditional art of Japanese tattooing. It has a long history dating back to the Edo period (1603–1868). Originally it was associated with criminality especially with regards to the Japanese mafia known as the yakuza. But in recent times it has since transformed into a revered art form, with motifs drawn from Japanese folklore, mythology, and nature. Today, wabori stands as a testament to both the intricate craftsmanship of its artisans and the cultural significance embedded in each beautifully designed tattoo.
